Position: Executive Director


Position Summary
The Executive Director of the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club, a 501c4 nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting shuffleboard and other recreational activities to its members and the public, preserving and celebrating the club's history while fostering community engagement. This includes providing opportunities for play, hosting tournaments and leagues, and offering lessons. The club also aims to be a welcoming space for all ages and skill levels, encouraging social interaction and fun. This individual is responsible for the overall strategic, operational, and financial leadership of the organization. The Executive Director works closely with the Board of Governors, Committees of the Board, staff, volunteers, and community stakeholders to advance the mission and ensure long-term sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategy

  • Develop and implement strategic plans in alignment with the club’s mission and goals.
  • Foster a strong, transparent working relationship with the Board of Governors and committees of the board and provide regular updates on organizational performance.
  • Serve as the public face of the club, fostering relationships with members, partners, and the broader community.
  • Uphold and promote the club’s historical legacy while guiding its evolution to meet modern community needs.

Membership & Community Engagement

  • Cultivate a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members.
  • Develop programs and events that reflect the club’s mission and appeal to a diverse membership base.
  • Build and sustain the Club’s membership and engage members in programs, events, and activities.
  • Strengthen community ties through outreach, partnerships, events, and collaborative initiatives.
  • Engage and partner with the national and international shuffleboard communities in programming events and tournaments.

Fundraising & Development

  • Lead fundraising efforts, including donor cultivation, grant writing, and special events.
  • Build and maintain relationships with foundations, corporations, the City of St. Petersburg and individual donors.
  • Ensure the organization meets its annual fundraising goals and diversifies its revenue streams.
  • Coordinate and oversee capital improvements, infrastructure updates, and adaptive reuse projects while respecting the site's historic integrity.

Operations & Program Management

  • Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and ethical standards.
  • Collaborate with the managerial staff and the Board to develop an annual organizational budget and long-term organizational development goals with corresponding funding strategies.
  • Oversee daily operations, including a diverse and proactive staff, programming, events, facility maintenance, financial management, human resources and volunteers.
  • Assist Club Manager in Recruiting, selection, training, supervising, and contributing to the professional advancement of staff, to ensure high-quality performance and career development in a rewarding and inclusive work environment.
  • Ensure a robust volunteer recruitment and retention program to support Club staff.
  • Ensure the club’s historic property is preserved and maintained in accordance with heritage standards.
  • Manage vendor relationships, contracts, and compliance with local regulations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training.
  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in the nonprofit sector including nonprofit governance and compliance.
  • Experience with fundraising and financial management.
  • Knowledge of facility operations, risk management, and visitor services in a public-facing environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and public speaking skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of members, staff, City staff, community stakeholders, and the general public.

Preferred Attributes

  • Master’s degree in nonprofit management, public administration, or related field preferred.
  • Passion for the organization’s mission and values.
  • Ability to build partnerships and engage with diverse communities.
  • Experience with strategic planning process.
  • Familiarity with best practices in historic preservation, in accordance with preservation standards, while ensuring safety, accessibility, and modern usability.

Founded in 1924, the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club is a historic recreational shuffleboard club in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg, Florida. It has the distinction of being the oldest and largest shuffleboard club in the world. The organization provides recreational use of the club to 2,700 members and the pubic, resulting in approximately 40,000 visits a year. We offer league play, lessons, history talks, and other events to preserve the historic facility, and to preserve and promote the game of shuffleboard.
